5. Wikströmskajen
Wikströmskajen is named after the pilot, later steamboat captain, Nils Oskar Wikström (1856-1924). In the picture, taken from Kattgrundet, Wikströmskajen is seen with the steamboat Tisnaren moored along the edge of the quay.
Tisnaren was a passenger boat that operated on Räktjärv in Överkalix from 1920. The boat was navigated down the rapids below Räktjärv to Kalix and the coast to serve the villages around the mouth of the Kalix River.
When Tisnaren was taken out of use, it was moored along the edge of the quay and became a play and fishing place for the village children until it eventually rusted away.
The entire quay was constructed from spink, a byproduct from the sawmill consisting of the edge wood of the logs. It has astonishing resistance to rot and can still be seen at the edges of the quay but is now filled with soil.
Wikströmskajen was the home port for the passenger boat with the route Nyborg-Nordanskär-Karlsborg-Filipsborg-Näsbyn-Kalixkajen. The most famous passenger boat was Strömkarlen from 1910 to 1920. The mail to Nyborg also arrived by boat.
At Wikströmskajen, smaller vessels such as small towboats and fishing boats could also dock. Now, at the far end of Wikströmskajen, you can stop and take a break at the newly established barbecue area.
